Appropriate Use of Blood and Blood Components in a Tertiary Care Hospital

Abstract

OBJECTIVE:

To determine the frequency of blood and blood products transfusions fulfilling appropriate criteria of blood transfusion in a public sector hospital

 

STUDY DESIGN:

Cross sectional study

 

PLACE & DURATION:

General Medical Wards & Emergency department,

Children’s Hospital Lahore & University of Child Health Sciences, Lahore

06 months (01 July to 31st December 2018)

 

MATERIALS AND METHODS:

200 children fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included from general medical wards and emergency department at The Children’s Hospital Lahore & UCHS, Lahore. An informed written consent taken from parents, demographic details like name and gender noted and blood transfusions given as per hospital protocol. Transfusions fulfilling the national and international guidelines were labeled as appropriate blood transfusion as per operational definition. Data was analyzed using SPSS version 20. Chi square test applied. P value ≤ 0.05 was considered as statistically significant.

 

RESULTS:

Over a period of 6 months 200 patients were studied and data was analyzed. Out of 200 transfusions, 93 (46.5%) transfusions were appropriate according to standard transfusion protocols. The data was stratified according to age, gender, type and place of transfusion. The results showed that there was no effect of these modifiers as the p value for age, gender, type and place of transfusion were 0.537, 0.356, 0.916 and 0.503 respectively.

 

CONCLUSION:

The protocol of blood and blood products, transfusion should be followed across all the hospitals to gain maximum benefits and avoid adverse outcomes.
